A Classroom Tool for Building Metacognition

For Teachers and Academics

The TEA Pot Analysis© is a formative assessment strategy that empowers students to engage in structured self-reflection. It serves as a metacognitive scaffold, guiding learners through the process of goal setting, performance monitoring, and strategic evaluation. By making their self-assessment process visible, the tool provides valuable data on student calibration and self-awareness.

The Four-Step Process:

STEP 1

Target Marks (T): The Forethought Phase: Before a test or assignment, students set a specific, achievable target mark. This initial step anchors the learning process in goal-setting, a key component of Zimmerman's model of Self-Regulated Learning.

STEP 2

Expected Marks (E): The Monitoring Phase: Immediately after completing the task, students review their work and record the score they expect to receive. This step prompts an immediate self-assessment of their performance and confidence level.

STEP 3

Actual Marks (A): The Feedback Phase: Once the assignment is graded, the student records their actual mark. The discrepancy between the Expected (E) and Actual (A) marks provides a clear, objective data point on the accuracy of their self-perception, often highlighting the Dunning-Kruger effect in action.

STEP 4

Potential Marks (Pot): The Self-Reflection Phase: Finally, the student analyzes their errors, identifying those caused by correctable carelessness (e.g., calculation errors, misreading the question). They add these marks back to their actual score to calculate their potential mark. This crucial final step helps students attribute poor performance to controllable factors rather than a fixed lack of ability, fostering a growth mindset and providing clear "feed-forward" for future tasks.

Tired of grades that don't reflect how hard you studied? The TEA Pot Analysis© is a simple tool to help you find out what's really going on. It helps you spot hidden mistakes so you can stop losing easy marks and start scoring what you truly deserve. When you do this consistently, over time you will start to see your grades improve gradually with the greater self-awareness this tool generates

Follow These Four Simple Steps:

STEP 1

T is for Target: Before you start a test or big assignment, decide on the grade you're aiming for. This is your Target Mark. Write it down! Having a clear goal is the first step to success.

STEP 2

E is for Expected: Right after you finish, take a moment to look over your work. Based on how you feel you did, what grade do you honestly expect to get? This isn't about wishing; it's about your gut feeling.

STEP 3

A is for Actual: When you get your paper back, write down your Actual Mark. Now, compare it to what you expected. Were you close? This is where you get a clear picture of how well you can judge your own work.

STEP 4

Pot is for Potential: Look at the mistakes you made. How many were silly errors, like misreading the instructions or a simple math mistake? Add those "careless" marks back to your actual score. This new number is your Potential Mark—it's what you could have scored if you'd caught those mistakes. The gap between your Actual and Potential is the key to improving next time!
